Computing Policy

All the following Computer Use Policies apply in addition to all those pertaining to the use of U.C. Berkeley Campus Information Technology infrastructure and equipment, which are described in the various links at theĀ UC Berkeley Campus IT Policies web site.

Access to Computer Resources

  1. Current Researchers and Employees
    1. Computer resources are reserved solely for the use of researchers and employees currently involved in projects with the Space Science Lab (SSL), as determined by association with the Principal Investigators.
      1. Researchers and employees are responsible for ensuring restricted access to computer equipment, on- or off-site.
      2. SSL researchers and employees are responsible for maintaining restricted access to computer logins and passwords.
      3. Utilization of non-SSL computer equipment for SSL work is generally not recommended or supported.
      4. Off-site support of SSL computer hardware and software is provided for current researchers when this is necessary for access to and ongoing research involving SSL projects.
    2. Guest access is provided for associated visiting researchers and employees at the discretion of Principal Investigators.
      1. Visiting scholars can expect support for their non-SSL computer equipment to the extent that such support is necessary for access to and ongoing research involving SSL projects.
  2. Former Researchers and Employees
    1. Data Maintenance Lifetime:
User account access, email, and files will be actively maintained online on servers and computers for the duration of employment plus one month. After one month, user account access will be locked out, and user data will be moved to offline storage, unless an appeal form is submitted by the former researcher or employees supervisor, in which case the data will be maintained online for a further six months. Further six month extensions may be obtained by the supervisor with the additional approval of the Principal Investigator.
    2. Computer support:
Computer hardware and software support is rarely available for former SSL researchers and staff, except in cases of Professors Emeriti and other distinguished former researchers and staff, due to restricted resources.
