Cloud Apps and Storage

Big Files

You can use our lab’s bigfiles service for sending files that are too large to send via email, as well as securely sending ITAR restricted documents.

Google Apps / Drive and Box (UC Berkeley offering)

UC Berkeley offers all UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students free access to both Google Apps / Drive and Box cloud services. These services are supported directly by UC Berkeley IT staff and they’ve created lot’s of documentation and training materials for how best to use them. In order to access these services you must use your username@berkeley.edu e-mail address, NOT your username@ssl.berkeley.edu address.

If you need off-site storage and sharing of SSL business documents, we highly recommend using one of these officially-supported cloud services. They offer free ($0) and unlimited data, and the University lawyers have crafted custom agreements with both Google and Box to protect your data privacy while in transit and at rest. Free mobile apps are also available for both of these.

To choose which one is best for you, see a detailed comparison between the Google and Box offerings.

For more information, documentation and assistance (including how to get a @berkeley.edu account), see the UC Berkeley bConnected website.

ITAR / EAR Documents

These solutions ARE NOT appropriate for storing/sharing ITAR, EAR or SBU documents. These documents are not allowed in any cloud solution, no matter who operates it or where it is stored, unless authorized by your project’s Principal Investigator (i.e. the ICON Nuxeo document repository or SSL SVN service).
